ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Senator Sherry Rehman has filed nomination papers for the slot of opposition leader in the Upper House.
Senator Rehman submitted her nomination papers to Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani. Her nomination is reportedly supported by 33 members of the opposition, including some independent members from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Balochistan besides Awami National Party (ANP) and Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M) senators.
If elected, Rehman would be the first female opposition leader in the Upper House of parliament.
On Wednesday, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto had nominated Sherry Rehman for the position. Speaking to media at the Parliament House, Opposition Leader in National Assembly Khursheed Shah said that the coalition of opposition parties have a majority in the Upper House of the parliament to elect its own opposition leader. Shah said that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) wants to move forward along with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). “PPP has no contention with the PTI,” he added.
