Ministry of Interior has requested the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to ban Hafiz Saeed backed new political party, officials said on Friday.
The move is in response to growing calls to ban political parties with links to militants and also prevent extremism entering into mainstream politics.
ECP spokesman Haroon Shinwari said that the status of the Milli Muslim League (MML) will be assessed on Oct 11 with a five-judge panel commission in Islamabad.
“MML is looking forward to apply soon for registration at the commission, but the ministry so far opposes that due to their links to militant groups. So far Mili Milli Muslim League has not registered with ECP”, Mr Shinwari said.
He further confirmed that the ministry has informed the commission about the links of banned militant groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) with MML.
In a statement, MML said, “we are not a bus or truck, we don’t need any registration”.
